Singing in choir is a great way to relieve stress!
New Choirs for Fall 2016 The Music Department is offering two new vocal ensembles this fall. Soprano/Alto Chorus MUSC 277 This choir created for women's voices will perform "The Ceremony of Carols" a beautiful seasonal work for SSA choir and harp. Our guest harpist will be Hannah Lash who has been hailed by the New York Times and The New Yorker Magazine as one of America's finest harpists and composers. Choir meets Tuesday 5:20-6:50 and Thursday 7:00-8:30 Tenor/Bass Choir or the Saxon Singers MUSC 278 This all male ensemble (or extremely low female voices) will perform new works by African American composer, Leslie Burrs as well as Hannah Lash's "De Profundis" with the Women's choir. Saxon Singers meet Monday 7:00-8:30 and Wednesday 5:20-6:50 Both ensembles carry 2 "C (Arts)" credits and no audition is necessary. Both choirs are also open to community, faculty and staff. These courses may also be taken as an overload with no overload fee.(you will have to fill out a course overload form and get the required signatures) For more information contact Luanne Crosby

AUDITIONS will be held in C.D. Smith Theatre in Miller, Sun. 8/28 and Mon. 8/29, with callbacks on Tues. 8/30, all at 7:00 p.m. EVERYONE is welcome to these cold reading auditions where we will cast two plays. COME!! Audition for AN ADULT EVENING OF SHEL SILVERSTEIN and THE ASH GIRL. We are looking for 25-30 actors, 12-15 men and 12-15 women. All are welcome. Contact Becky Prophet, for more information
Yoga Classes

Remembering Toni Olshan
- Location: Book End Lounge, Herrick Library

Friends, family and colleagues of Toni Olshan are invited to a reception in her honor at the Herrick Library Book End Lounge on Friday, August 26th, from 4-5:30 pm.
It will be an opportunity to get together to remember and savor the gracious and encouraging life of a wonderful friend to us all. There won’t be a formal program, just bring a favorite story or remembrance to share. Light refreshments will be served.
Foreign Language Placement Exam

Foreign Language Placement Exam

Exams are given in French, German and Spanish.

Who needs to take the Placement Exam?
Students who have taken more than two years of a language in high school and who intend to take the same language at AU must take the exam.
* Students who are bilingual or native speakers or who have spoken the language at home.
* Students do NOT need to take the exam if they did not study a language previously or if they are planning to take a different language in college.
* Students who wish to demonstrate proficiency in another language should contact Dr. Kerry Kautzman about procedures.

*Please remember to bring your student ID and a 2 pencil*
Allen Walk and 2016 Opening Convocation

New students will walk from Powell to McLane through "Allen Walk" officially beginning our 181st year of learning. Convocation is an important event to welcome you to your new journey at Alfred. There will be opening remarks by President Mark Zupan and Student Senate President Kyle Silberstein. You will also hear a memorable first lecture of your college career.

September Red Cross Blood Drive
- Location: Knight Club, Powell Campus Center
- Time: 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM
Residence Life is hosting a Red Cross Blood Drive on Tuesday, Sept. 6 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Knight Club, Powell Campus Center. Faculty, staff, students, and community members are invited to participate.

Appointments are appreciated but walk-ins are welcome. To schedule an appointment go to: or sign up for a time in person in the Powell Campus Center Wednesday 8/31 and Thursday 9/1 from 11-1 p.m.

Intended donors are urged to drink plenty of fluids on the day of the donation, wear comfortable clothing with sleeves that are easy to roll up, eat iron-rich foods prior to donation day, and bring a list of prescription/over-the-counter medications that you are currently taking or are in your system. Students also bring a student ID.

26-Aug-16 — Alfred Station firefighter to recall events of Sept. 2001 to open Alfred University lecture series

Blake Mayo, a firefighter in the Alfred Station department, will present “9-11 Looking Back 15 Years” at the first Bergren Forum of the 2016-17 academic year at Alfred University.

25-Aug-16 — Works by Mario Prisco to be exhibited at Cohen Gallery

The Cohen Gallery at Alfred University (AU) will present recent figure drawings and fantastical watercolors by Professor Emeritus and Dean Emeritus Mario Prisco. “Observed and Imagined: Works on Paper by Mario Prisco” runs  from Sept. 9 to Oct. 16. 

25-Aug-16 — Former employee honored by George Eastman Museum

A portfolio of travel photojournalism by a onetime employee of Alfred University has been acquired by the George Eastman Museum, in Rochester, New York. The museum, the world’s largest repository of photographic images, announced recently it had obtained for its permanent collection three gelatin-silver prints by the late Caroline Littell of Alfred.

24-Aug-16 — Alfred University Guzheng Ensemble Brings Home Gold Medal in International Competition

Daisy Wu, visiting associate professor of music in the Division of Performing Arts at Alfred University, and the Alfred University Guzheng Ensemble won the top prize in the 2016 New York Chinese Musical Instruments International Competition, bringing home the gold medal in the amateurs’ division. Prof. Wu also won an award as the top music instructor.
